‘Signal Lost…’ is an Audio / Visual installation consisting of remixing old, obsolete technology into small music videos that focus on a particular theme of Television, Cellular Mobile Phones and the dawn of Dial-up Internet to simulate a doomsday scenario of a total technological cut off from the world.

On the 20th June 2000, The BBC suffered a major power cut in their main Television Centre in West London that affected the main TV and Radio services that were being transmitted from - creating a down time that was extremely long. I believed this was as close to an apocalyptic situation the modern world had ever experienced. It creates curiosity as to what Media executives would broadcast if there was nothing left - the music, visuals, announcements, or even adverts. This influence went on to create the first video ‘Technical Difficulties’ that compiles footage of news reports shortly before and after the incident. The main sample looped throughout is the same track that was played during the down time of the broadcaster.

‘Please Hold’ relates to the possible situation of trying to call someone in a world with no connections. The main looping melody is taken from a telecom being on hold and the visuals also focus on early mobile technologies that are seen as tacky and obsolete from a modern day point of view.

‘Four oh Four’ is a celebration of the creation of the internet. With this video, I wanted to emulate the early digital sounds of dial-up along with other highly compressed audio found on things such as CD-ROM and floppy discs. I acknowledge this as a celebration for its exciting potential, but as a warning for what lies for the future, not only on Internet connectivity but for the rapid change of relationships, business, personality and even outlook on life.

The final video in this compilation is ‘Our last chance…’. As everything shuts down and electronic connectivity is completely gone, we rely on one last artefact that may save us - space. On September 5th, 1977, a space probe known as the Voyager I was launched to reach the furthest distance in space. It famously contains a Golden Record that holds recordings of the Earth and images that represent the world in hopes of other life to find and learn of our Planet. I saw this as a beacon of hope for whoever finds the probe, may save us from the depths of radio static and from the analogue wasteland that has consumed us.
